Paris, France (part I)

Ok maybe I'm just being stupid but you have to realise I'm living in America now so you need to qualify which Paris you are talking about, you know. I mean it could be Paris, Texas or maybe even Paris Creek in South Australia (no really, look it up).

Anyway, after the delights of Italy we moved on to the City of Lights. My first visit and on the whole it did not disappoint. Sadly we only managed one rude waiter and everyone else we dealt with in hotels, shops, taxis, on the street etc were perfectly human.

One very cool thing we came across were "free" English speaking walking tours - all conducted by local Parisians and only asking for a tip at the end, we did four of these (South bank/Latin Quarter, Montmratre, North Bank and Marais). They were all great as the guide endeavoured to take you off the well worn tourist paths to see a little bit of the hidden gems of Paris. I have to say I think they succeeded when we emerged from a side lane into a throng of tourists on the way up to Sacré-Coeur. Obviously we hadn't been on the "main" tourist route, and while you can just go wandering on your own, it was great to get a bunch of local history, stories and opinions (Thomais really didn't like those North bank people very much). http://www.paris--walks.com/

Of course this and the big sites led to a LOT of photo opportunities. Here are some of my favourites.

Venice (part I)

The last stop on our Italy visit was famous Venice. I wasn't quite sure how I'd like it considering how many tourists flock to the city but I think even the hordes of camera waving, slow walking, slightly sunburned people couldn't dampen the experience. We had amazing weather and in a few day managed to catch most of the big sites and a few of the back streets. I even managed to have a coffee that I liked. (This is a big step for me.)

Upon arrival we discovered there was a partial strike, meaning the waterbuses (Vaporetto) were only running every hour and were packed. So we dug into our wallets and hired a water taxi. For 13 people and luggage it turned out to be reasonable value. When we slipped our driver a few extra bucks to take the long route and detour through the backstreets (waterways) before delivering us near our hotel, well it made it all worthwhile.

San Gimignano, Siena and Monteriggioni

From our base in Florence we took a day trip that encompassed San Gimignano, Siena, a Tuscan winery and the small hilltop fort-town of Monteriggioni.

San Gimignano is a small medieval town famous for its 13 towers. Siena is best known for the bareback horse race around the Piazza Del Campo known as the Palio. Jockeys represent each of Sienas 17 districts and the winners' colours are displayed throughout the town for the year following the win.
